The decision to purchase a Total Gym ® machine should be well-thought out. Do not purchase a Total Gym ® on a whim based on a late-night infomercial (more on those later). The high-end Total Gym ® models are expensive and the cheapest models may not be the best choice for you. It is also important to understand yourself, your fitness level, your habits, your home environment, and your family before choosing a Total Gym ®. Before you begin thinking about which model of Total Gym ® is right for you, you need to decide if any Total Gym ® is right for you. Some of these general questions are relevant when purchasing any home gym exercise equipment.
Before deciding to purchase a Total Gym ®, you need to make the following assessments:
Advanced exerciser, body builder, or power lifter
If you fall into one of these categories, a Total Gym ® may not be right for you. Some Total Gym ® models are good machinse for the general public, but may not meet the needs and desires of an advanced exerciser.
The right home environment to use a Total Gym ®
Although the Total Gym ® takes up relatively little space, you do need a space to use it. If you have to move furniture or shift things around every time you use it, you are less likely to use it than if you have a dedicated space for it. Although they are marketed as easy to fold and put away, for some people they may seem heavy, cumbersome, and difficult to fold up and store. Make sure that if you have family members who will be around when you work out that they will not hinder your ability to work out at home. You should have a place where you can work out without disturbing the rest of the family or without being distracted or interrupted by kids, pets, etc. If your family will be around while you use your Total Gym ®, make using your Total Gym ® a family activity. You need to be able to work out at home without anyone or anything distracting you, or preventing you from working out.
Make sure you can work out on your own at home. If you need someone to work out with to stay focused and on track find that person and work out with them. Do not look for excuses or find distractions when trying to work out at home. If you cannot work out on your own and at home consistently, then you need to have someone (preferably a family member) who will be dedicated enough to work out with you. Think long and hard about different ways to motivate yourself to work out on your own and at home. Many people have good intentions when purchasing exercise equipment to use at home, but underestimate their ability to work out at home (and end up hanging clothes on their new purchase).
Enjoying using the Total Gym ®
You need to enjoy using your Total Gym ®. You need to enjoy any activity or machine you expect to use consistently. You cannot fake this.
The support of my family and those with whom I live
Having the support of your family and those you live with is a large part of any home workout program. Make sure you have this support. (Most family members will not be supportive if your new Total Gym ® blocks the TV during the big game or their one favorite show!)
Assembling the Total Gym ®
Although this used to be an issue with Total Gym ®, now it is not. If you purchase a new Total Gym ® you will not have to assemble it. This makes the worry about assembling a new Total Gym ® a non-issue.
Total Gym ® offers a wide range of machines which vary greatly in quality:
The many types of Total Gyms ® We cannot choose which Total Gym ® is right for you, but we have some questions you should ask yourself when selecting which Total Gym ® is right for you. We will point out some of the positives and negatives we have encountered with some of the Total Gym ® models so that you can be as informed as possible when choosing a Total Gym ®.
Although many people hear the term Total Gym ® and think this is one type of machine, there are many models of Total Gym ®, and they all are not even made by the same manufacturer. Fitness Quest, Inc. is a company licensed to produce cheaper versions of popular fitness machines and equipment for "as seen on tv" informercials and ads. These are much cheaper than the Total Gym ® models produced by the original manufacturer, Engineering Fitness International, Inc. (EFI) and their quality is inferior. We want to make sure everyone understands the difference between these products and how they are made.
Fitness Quest, Inc. "As seen on TV" Total Gym models:
These are the least expensive Total Gym ® machines available. Fitness Quest, Inc. is licensed to sell inexpensive versions of the Total Gym ®. These are the machines you see in ads and infomercials generally ranging in prices that are much cheaper than the retail models. If you are thinking about a Total Gym ®, we recommend that you purchase one of the better quality retail models: Total Gym ® XLS, Total Gym ® 3000, or the Total Gym ® 2000, not an inferior informercial model. There is also a model sold only in retail stores like Wal-Mart or Target. It is the Model 1700 Club. It is designed as a low cost alternative to the more superior Total Gym ® models listed above. It is priced right around $369.99. Even if your budget is tight, we recommend the Total Gym ® 2000 at $399.00 above the Model 1700 Club.
The entry level retail Total Gym ® (Total Gym ® 2000, $399) offers over 40 exercises. It does not offer the same things as the top Total Gym ® models, but should meet the needs of most beginning exercisers who weigh less than 250 pounds (its weight capacity). There is no need to purchase more machine than you need or will use, so carefully weigh your needs when choosing your Total Gym ®.
An experienced exerciser may or may not need to choose a more advanced Total Gym ®. This does not necessarily mean that you need to go to the top-of-the-line model, but that you need to decide what options and features are important to you. The resistance comes from your own body, so the resistance or weights that would normally be an issue when purchasing a resistance machine are not a factor here. Find the model with the features/options you want and make sure that the weight capacity can accomodate you. Most advanced exercisers would probably want to consider the retail Total Gym ® XLS ($1748.25) or the retail Total Gym 3000 ($999.00). These two models of Total Gym are sturdier than the other models and come with better warranty coverage than the less expensive models.
Who will be using the Total Gym ®?
Will you be the only person using your Total Gym ®? If not, factors like features, weight capacity, etc. will need to be considered for each person who will using the Total Gym ®. Your choice may be very different if you are buying a Total Gym ® that will be used by more than one person. If choosing a Total Gym ® for people with a range of fitness levels, choose the one that will accommodate the more advanced user. A beginner can use the most advanced Total Gym ®, but an advanced exerciser may not be satisfied with an entry level model. If more that one person will be using the Total Gym ®, you need to agree on what model will work for everyone. Since all retail models of the Total Gym ® fold flat for storage space is less of a factor when making the decision on which model Total Gym ® to choose.
Storage of your Total Gym ® and where you will use it
Figure out where you are going to store your Total Gym ® and where you are going to use it. Make sure you are very realistic about this and remember that your Total Gym ® should be stored near where you are going to use it. (You are less likely to use your Total Gym ® if it is difficult to take out and put away.) If possible, use your Total Gym ® in a place where you do not need to move it or store it. After you have figured out where you are going to store and use your Total Gym ®, take accurate measurements of these areas. Details for each model list the measurements you need including the dimensions, the folded footprint (if applicable) and the workout area. If you choose a Total Gym ®, make sure that it can be stored and used in the place you have selected. The space you have to work with may be a factor when choosing your Total Gym ®.
Upright/vertical workout positions
Many Total Gym ® exercises are done in a prone position. Make sure you understand this and are comfortable with it when choosing a Total Gym ®.
Importance of the warranty
All Total Gym ® retail models come with a lifetime warranty on the frame only. The more expensive, more advanced models have a longer warranty than the less expensive models. The more advanced models are designed to be more durable than the less expensive models. The Total Gym ® XLS also comes with a six month warranty on all parts and the Total Gym ® 3000 comes with a ninety day warranty on all parts. The Total Gym ® 2000 does not come with a parts warranty and this should be considered if you are thinking about purchasing that model Total Gym ®.
Obviously there are many more questions you should ask yourself when deciding which Total Gym ® model is right for you. Our questions are designed to help you make an informed decision and to point out some of the less obvious things you should think about when making your choice.
After someone has made the decision to purchase a Total Gym ® machine, the next question we hear is, "Where can I find a good deal on a retail Total Gym ®?" There are a few things that will be true no matter where you purchase your Total Gym ®, including the warranty (depending on the model), the money back guarantee, the 30 day in-home trial for $1.00, etc.
With that being said, we would like to make a point about the guarantee. It is a positive incentive when a manufacturer stands behind their product like this, but it is important to understand that most people will not return their Total Gym ® if they do not see the results they expected. If you do not return your Total Gym ® after your $1.00 thirty day in-home trial, you will be billed for the remainder of your payments. Not very many people will take the time and effort to pack it up and return a product like this. Companies understand this and it makes good marketing sense for them to offer money back guarantees and in-home trials.
